I am concerned with mythologies. Specifically, I interrogate the construction of characters and ideals within the domestic sphere and their effect on the individual.

My subjects portray archetypes and as such they become myths. The child, the mother, the elder. These figures carved so deeply into our collective consciousness, signify a range of virtues and histories. The vulnerability of infancy and senility or perhaps the hope of life and despair of death; these are signifiers that hold emotional value. We can share these values or as is often the case, we may hold them in opposition and grant or deny compassion accordingly.

Much contemporary discourse insists on a simple dichotomy; binaries of strength and weakness or of guilt and innocence. This leaves little time for restraint or room for uncertainty. My work seeks to challenge this.
